A meeting of experts was convened by WHO on December 3rd, 2003 in Geneva, Switzerland, to develop technical specifications for an accurate and affordable blood pressure measuring device for office/clinic use in low resource settings. The objectives of the meeting were two-fold: (1) To elaborate on the preferred type of blood pressure measuring device for office/clinic use in low resource settings; and (2) To develop technical specifications for such a device. The meeting participants discussed a variety of issues, including the future of the mercury sphygmomanometer, the importance of device accuracy and validation, and the current state-of-the-market. Based on these discussions, recommendations and technical specifications for a blood pressure measuring device for office/clinic use in low resource settings, were developed.
